Its mission is to examine the convergence between literature and other areas of knowledge in the arts, sciences and humanities.

Originally titled Urgences (1981-1991), the journal developed an editorial voice at the start of the year 2000 with two collections : Confluences and Émergence.

Over the decades, Tangence and its collections have strengthened the relationships between the different campuses of the Université du Québec system, particularly between the Département des lettres et humanités of the Université du Québec à Rimouski and the Département de lettres et communication sociale of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.
